Sex education in Ireland and the UK is failing badly
The UK and Ireland's approach to sex education is failing,
and consequently many young people still don't understand the risks
of unprotected sex, or how
to use a condom properly. Safe sex information has to become
more inclusive of all the different aspects of sexuality, and shed
its prudishness, if its to have a worthwhile effect.
British and Irish children remain one of the most poorly
educated children in Europe in regard to safe sex practices
and the safe sex education system in the UK and Ireland has to address
the short-comings, if the rise of STD's
in both the UK and Ireland is to be controlled.
Programmes will have to inform Irish and British young people
about the risks of STD's and the ways to reduce the risks when
having sex. They have to become
familiar with contraceptive methods and devices and learn how
to properly use condoms.
Surveys show that up to 25% of all Irish and UK teenagers
are having sex, and that many are unaware of the risks
of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV
and unwanted pregnancy. Many don't connect sex with becoming pregnant
with a child, and are unsure of the how to properly use or buy
condoms.
